The Nuttall oak (Quercus nutallii) is a fast-growing, large tree with nice red fall colors. The bark is grey-brown and smooth when young, becoming rougher as the tree matures. The tree is best when planted on moist, fertile sites with good drainage. The acorns ripen from September to October of the second year, and fall between September and February. The Nuttal oak is a favorite of deer and wild turkey. Good choices for USDA zones are 5 through 9.
