The Chinese Chestnut (Castanea mollissima) is a larger tree, producing bigger nuts and beginning production as early as three years old. This tree can live longer than 150 years, and is grown in USDA zones 4 through 8. This tree is disease-resistant, drought-tolerant and adaptable to most soil types. It grows to a height of 40 to 60-feet tall, and branches can spread to about 60-feet wide. This tree performs best in well drained, loamy to sandy loam soils. One tree can provide up to 50 pounds of large meaty nuts that are equally sweet and nutritious. Producing fruit in 5-6 years, the chestnuts are a great food source for deer.
