The Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa) is a very long-lived tree that grows 70 to 80 feet, with an 80-foot spread. The oak is tolerant of a variety of moisture and soil conditions, adapting well to urban settings. The acorns mature in one growing season, and drop from the tree August through November. It is one of the heaviest acorn producers of the species. Many birds, squirrels, deer, wild turkey, black bear, and wood ducks enjoy the bur oak’s spoils. Preferred zones are 3 through 8.
